How to DIY a Bleached Flannel

How to Bleach a Flannel: Give Old Favorite Plaid New Life

There’s something special about turning an ordinary thrifted flannel into a one-of-a-kind piece with a little creativity (and bleach!). Whether you’re going for a grunge, vintage, or boho vibe, bleaching a flannel is one of the easiest ways to give it that lived-in, one of a kind look.

✨ What You’ll Need:

  • A flannel (practice sustainable fashion - shop at the thrift store!)

  • Household bleach

  • Spray bottle or squeeze bottle

  • Gloves

  • Plastic surface or trash bag to protect your workspace

  • Water & mild detergent

🌿 Step-by-Step:

  1. Prep Your Flannel
Wash and dry your shirt first — this removes dirt or fabric softener that could affect the bleach pattern.

  2. Mix Your Bleach Solution
Combine one part bleach to one part water in a spray or squeeze bottle. (You can go stronger, but start light — bleach works fast!)

  3. Lay It Out
Place your flannel flat on a protected surface. Decide where you want the bleached areas — random splashes, a faded ombré, or a full back design.

  4. Apply the Bleach
Spray, drip, or pour bleach where you want the effect. Watch as the color lifts — it happens within minutes! Keep an eye on it to avoid over-bleaching.  How fast it bleaches depends on the amount of sunlight you have in your work area.

  5. Rinse & Wash
Once you love the pattern, rinse thoroughly with cold water. Then wash it alone with mild detergent and dry as usual.

🔥 Style Tip:

Bleached flannels pair perfectly with vintage tees, distressed denim, or layered over dresses for that effortlessly cool, reworked vibe.

Each one turns out different — and that’s the beauty of it. Every piece becomes its own work of art.

♻️ DIY & Sustainable Fashion

Bleaching thrifted flannels is not only fun — it’s also a great way to upcycle clothing and reduce waste. Each piece becomes a one-of-a-kind wearable art form, perfect for adding character to your wardrobe or selling in your boutique.
